Why add a soundbar?

More than extra volume.

The right soundbar can make television sound clearer, broader and more engaging without turning the room into a full component home theatre.

    Clearer, fuller TV sound

    A dedicated soundbar has more room for speakers than a slim television. Compatible models may also provide a centre channel or dialogue setting to make speech easier to follow.

    A compact alternative

    One main unit can deliver a wider soundstage without the space and cabling of a traditional multi-speaker system. A subwoofer or rear speakers can still be added when the model supports them.

    Sound matched to the screen

    Centred placement keeps voices and effects connected to the picture, while a planned cable route preserves the clean finish of a wall-mounted TV.

Choosing a setup

The differences that matter.

Channels and bass

A 2.0 bar is stereo. A 2.1 system adds a subwoofer, while 3.1 and higher layouts can add a dedicated centre channel and more spatial separation.

ARC, eARC or optical

HDMI ARC/eARC can carry TV audio and often supports volume control through the TV remote. Available formats still depend on both devices and the source.

All-in-one or expandable

Some soundbars keep everything in one enclosure. Others pair with a wireless subwoofer or optional rear speakers for more bass and surround coverage.

Front-, side- or upward-firing

Speaker direction affects placement. Upward- and side-firing drivers need a clear path, so the TV, shelves and decor must not block them.
