A useful starting point
Use viewing distance as a starting point, then balance how you like to watch with the TV's actual dimensions, room layout and budget.
Measure from where you actually watch
Two measurements, two different jobs
Concept drawings, not a scale plan. Personal preference and the room still shape the choice.
Measure from your normal seated eye position to the intended screen position, rather than measuring the length of the whole room. If you also watch while standing in the kitchen, note that second viewing position separately.
The advertised size is the screen diagonal, not the width of the television. Compare the model's actual width and height with the wall, furniture and any proposed soundbar. A large blank wall alone is not a reason to choose the largest screen.
An immersive starting point, not a compulsory size
Samsung Australia's sizing guidance uses a viewing distance of approximately 1.2 times the screen diagonal for an immersive experience. The examples below convert that method into metres; they are not minimum safe distances or a guarantee of personal comfort.
Calculation: screen diagonal in inches × 1.2 × 0.0254 = viewing distance in metres. If you prefer a less dominant screen, compare smaller sizes at your actual distance before buying.
| Screen diagonal | Calculated distance |
|---|---|
| 43 inches | 1.31 m |
| 50 inches | 1.52 m |
| 55 inches | 1.68 m |
| 65 inches | 1.98 m |
| 75 inches | 2.29 m |
| 85 inches | 2.59 m |
| 98 inches | 2.99 m |
Balance the calculation with everyday viewing
A cinema-like picture may appeal for films and gaming, while another viewer prefers a smaller screen for mixed everyday programmes. Consider what you watch, your existing TV and whether you want a noticeably larger picture. Room fit and budget still matter.
Resolution and the quality of the programmes you watch should be considered alongside size. OLED and QLED describe display technologies; they do not by themselves tell you a TV's resolution. Check the exact model rather than relying on a technology label.
Preview the screen before ordering
This gives you a practical sense of scale. For example, compare two candidate outlines above the same cabinet rather than comparing diagonal numbers alone. If the larger outline dominates the room more than you want, the smaller choice may be the better fit even when an immersive-distance formula suggests otherwise.
- Find the actual model width and height in its specifications.
- Use paper or suitable removable tape to mark that footprint on the wall without damaging the finish.
- Look at it from your normal sofa position and any second viewing area.
- Check furniture, soundbar space, reflections and the planned bottom edge.
Plan mounting after choosing the model
Once the model is known, we can consider its weight, mounting requirements, wall position and connections. A larger screen can change both the preferred height and the equipment needed, so include the model or intended size when requesting a quote.
