When is a recessed TV wall box worth considering?

Understand when recessed connections help a slim TV installation, what the wall must allow and how power, cables and access affect the finish.

A useful starting point

We prefer a suitable recessed connection solution for a clean finish when plugs would otherwise take up space behind the TV. The TV, bracket and wall still determine what is achievable.

What a recessed box changes

Where the connections sit matters

Connection-space concepts, not wiring or product installation diagrams. No wall gap is guaranteed; fixed electrical work requires a licensed electrician.

A recessed wall box places suitable connection points behind the wall surface, providing room for plugs and cable access. It is different from a bracket that moves the screen into a recess, and different from hiding a cable route between the TV and furniture.

For example, Matchmaster's RP04 is designed to accommodate outlet plates and cable passages behind equipment. Its published cavity requirements are specific to that product; another box may need a different depth or arrangement. These products illustrate the options, not a promise that a particular model will suit your wall or be supplied.

When we would discuss it

We usually aim for the closest practical finish. Beside tall furniture, or where connections need regular access, more clearance can be preferable. A recessed box is a tool for the agreed result, not a requirement for every ordinary TV mount.

  • You want a low-profile finish but plugs occupy space behind the screen.
  • The TV's rear connections need a planned position and cable route.
  • Power, antenna or data connections need to be considered together.
  • A specialist slim or Frame-style installation needs model-specific connection planning.

The wall and access decide what fits

Check usable cavity space, framing, existing services and where the bracket will sit. A recessed box must not obstruct the support needed for the mount. Solid masonry or a restricted cavity may call for another plan.

Consider how plugs will be connected, how the TV can be released and how equipment will be reached later. Plan the devices now—including a possible future soundbar—so the desired finish does not make an everyday connection awkward.

Frame TVs and One Connect need the exact model

For an art-style installation, our preferred finish includes a planned concealed connection route where suitable. Models using a wired One Connect arrangement need the box position and the specific cable's installation requirements checked. Do not assume every supplied cable is approved for an in-wall route.

Other designs still need power at the TV. Samsung's Australian Wireless One Connect guidance, for example, describes a separate power connection at the television. We treat suitable recessed power as part of planning the close art-style finish for those setups, rather than calling it a universal Samsung requirement.

Tell us the full model and year. The method must follow that model's instructions, cable suitability and wall assessment; a product-family name alone is not enough to establish the route.

Plan electrical work as a separate part of the job

A new or relocated fixed power point is electrical work. Our electrical partners handle that part with a licensed electrician, coordinated with the TV position and cable plan. It is a separately quoted add-on, not automatically included in mounting.

A brush opening for compatible signal cables is not permission to feed an ordinary mains lead through the wall. Ask us to plan power and signal connections together so each part uses a suitable method.

What to include in your enquiry

  • TV model, desired wall gap and bracket preference.
  • Wall type if known, plus a photo of existing points.
  • Devices you will connect and where they will sit.
  • Whether the TV has a wired or wireless connection box.
  • Any future soundbar, cabinet or connection changes.
